Captain America: Shield Agent

Excited about the release of the movie Captain America: The First Avenger, I came up with a challenge for myself: capture an action shot of Captain America straight out of the camera.
Part of the 3 3/4″ “Marvel Universe” line from Hasbro, this Captain America action figure comes with his original shield.
This image is straight out of the camera: no tweaking, no color processing, no cropping, no nothing.

Setup
Because the figure is suspended, the setup for this photos is a little more complex than one of my normal tabletop photos.
Captain America hangs on two pieces of invisible thread attached to a yardstick held above the scene by clear plastic cups. The backdrop is a 12×12″ sheet of scrapbooking paper that looks like bricks.
Three incandescent flashlights provide the backlighting, while a single push-light provides the lighting for the figure.
Alternates
I initially shot this photo using the stock camera lens before switching to a macro lens. As you can see, the stock lens does provide some depth of field and blurring of the brick backdrop, but not nearly as much as the macro lens.
I also shot a version for Instagram.
